I am often in a dilemma when in Agra while choosing between fine dining and local eateries. On some days, I enjoy the soft music, dim lights and etiquette. But for most others, I am glad to sit on a plastic chair or bench or stand on a pavement surrounded by loud noises and flashing lights. With a paper or leaf plate in hand, I can enjoy the refreshing flavours of a myriad variety of foods and dishes that can beat the taste of the finest restaurants.
Agra is a popular tourist city, and the Taj Mahal obviously stands out as its most loved landmark. People from across the world book hotels in Agra and come to see the Taj in its outstanding beauty. Besides, there are also many other attractions, such as Agra Fort, Mehtab Garden and Baby Taj. But an underrated and often less talked about highlight is the local eateries that are found not only near the main city attractions, but spread across the city.
Sadar Bazaar, the haven of local and street food in Agra
I felt spoilt for choice when I roamed the streets of Sadar Bazaar. The Chaat Gali stands out, hands down, for housing a staggering number of small food shops, roadside vendors, kiosks and also permanent stalls. Lined up side-by-side, my eyes keep wavering from one stall to another, as my mind races to figure out what to eat and in which order. Should I try aloo tikki and dahi bhalla first, followed by golgappas, or should I order pav bhaji with a basket chaat instead? I wanted to try it all, but alas, I am only human.
Where else do I go for some of the best flavours in the city?
Old Agra or the Kinari Bazaar area is also another one of my favourite spots. Narrow lanes lined with eateries, I enjoyed gobbling samosas, pethas, rabris and other local sweets. Also, the Raja ki Mandi is a popular area for Agra locals. Cheap, inexpensive and yet unbelievably delicious, I have enjoyed the kachoris, jalebis and bedais here. A common secret is that this area is known for its hot, piping breakfast stalls. Puris, aloo sabji and many other delicacies are served here for customers who come from far and wide.
From the busy commercial MG Road and Pratap Pura areas to the tourist-concentrated Taj Ganj and Fatehabad Road, local eateries are found aplenty everywhere.
There is something special about local street eateries
While hopping from one food joint to another in Agra, I have often wondered why I enjoy coming again and again to the local places. The most obvious conclusion that I reached was the fact that the food is just outright delicious. The flavours hit the palate with an intensity that not only tingles the taste buds, but also warms the heart. Many dishes are innovative and unique to the city. For instance, basket or tokri chaat, stuffed petha, bedai, spicy aloo and petha with Dalmoth are combinations and cuisines that simply blow my mind.
It is not just about the food, but also about emotions and culture
I have always believed that food, especially in India, is not only about filling the stomach or satiating our taste buds. It is the coming together of cultures, ideas and people. It is a form of art that thrives differently under different environments. I found Agra’s best flavours in its smaller eateries not only because of the taste or quality of the dishes. I found the flavours also because of the people who cook and consume them. People who prepare fresh food in front of our eyes without flinching or shying away from their job. The stall owners who pride in their skill and in the joy that they bring to those they serve.
Also, the surroundings add to the charm. The buzz of food lovers, the smell of sweet and savoury, the chatter and sound of laughter blend with the flavours on the plate. The relaxed, homely surroundings, the warm comfort and the fresh, just-off-the-stove preparations give Agra’s small local eateries an edge over the big restaurants. Of course, not to forget that they are much cheaper in price, but far more wholesome in enjoyment.
