Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Nottingham for their first joint public appearance in the UK since returning to Britain earlier this year. The couple visited three community organizations, marking Meghan’s first public engagement in the country since relocating at the end of August and her first UK public appearance in four years.
Low-Key Arrival in Nottingham
A small crowd gathered outside the Community Recording Studio as the duke and duchess began their itinerary. Charlotte O’Neill, one of those waiting, said she had attended a previous royal event and wanted to see the couple again. “It’s not very often you get to see a real-life Prince, is it?” she asked.
The visit took place against a backdrop of limited public enthusiasm, with no official police presence outside the venues. Despite this, a friend of Meghan’s told Hello! magazine that she was prepared to “stick her head above the parapet” and engage with causes she remains passionate about.
Meghan’s friend emphasized that there are still causes and issues the Duchess is really passionate about supporting, and Nottingham is one of those places where she feels compelled to act. The local sentiment echoes this support, with residents like Charlotte O’Neill expressing that “every family has its ups and downs,” reflecting a degree of public sympathy toward the couple despite broader criticism.

Three Stops Across the City
The Sussexes visited the Community Recording Studio, where Harry met musician and poet Jah Digga, who had attended the studio as a child. Meghan participated in a confidence-building and bracelet-making workshop with young girls. Harry last visited the studio in St Ann’s in September last year, when he personally donated £1.1 million to BBC Children In Need to support young people affected by violence.
At Himmah Hub, a food poverty action group, Meghan joined a cooking class and helped pack food-parcel donations. This reconnects her with women from the Hubb Community Kitchen, which she supported in 2018 through a cookbook project aiding families affected by the Grenfell fire in London.
The final stop was Epic Partners, an organization running youth programs, sports, mentoring, and education initiatives in the St Ann’s and Sneinton neighborhoods. The group works with children, young people, and families in the local community.
Royal Status Remains Unclear
Although the engagements carried the appearance of official royal duties, they are not formally recognized as such. A letter to Government stakeholders authorised by the King last month clarifying the Sussexes remain “private citizens” and do not represent the Firm. The duke and duchess are said to consider themselves “public figures” and were caught off-guard by the letter from the King clarifying that they remain “private citizens” and do not represent the Crown.

Harry and Meghan have described themselves as “public figures,” but their standing within the royal hierarchy continues to be defined by the monarchy. Their return to the UK has drawn attention to ongoing tensions, particularly as King Charles III prepares for a ceremonial opening of the Welsh Parliament, an event that some media outlets suggested might be overshadowed by the Sussexes’ activities.
Charles’s appearance is poignant as it will be the first time he attends a ceremonial opening of the Welsh Parliament as King, showing the symbolic significance of his role in contrast to Harry and Meghan’s more informal outreach. The timing of the Sussexes’ visit has led to comparisons between their grassroots approach and the King’s ceremonial duties, highlighting differing paths within the same institution.
Community Focus Over Ceremony
The Nottingham visits emphasized grassroots involvement rather than ceremonial protocol. Each stop highlighted local initiatives addressing youth development, food insecurity, and creative expression. These themes align with causes the couple has supported since stepping back from senior royal roles in 2020.
